I read a lot of negative reviews about “Rock of Ages”, before actually seeing the musical last night. Having very low expectations about the film, I was actually surprised when I found myself singing and humming along the songs from the movie. Yes, I had a great time watching the movie and I love every minute of it. Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough) and Drew Boley’s (Diego Boneta) love story is somehow cheesy but that’s actually what made the movie more relatable and charming. Catherine Zeta-Jones plays the role of the hilarious and cunning Patricia Whitmore, the main antagonist of the film. To be honest, Catherine Zeta-Jones stole the show. She delivered good laughs in the entire film. Tom Cruise is the rock god Stacee Jaxx, the one who delivered the rock and roll, and seriously, Tom Cruise is pure sex. Watching the film is like entering a world of fun-filled karaoke. Most of the songs are familiar and were given Broadway style melodies so you will definitely find yourself singing and humming along the tunes. Once you hear the songs, you will think about downloading these past hits after watching the film. Giant production numbers are colorful, enchanting, and actually made me think that being a teenager back in the 80’s is a lot of fun. Why don’t we have these rock bands anymore? Poor us.
Anyway, I discovered something interesting after watching the film. “Rock of Ages” actually has a connection with Christina Aguilera. It’s kinda hard to explain and it sounds crazy, but here, let me show you.
Julianne Hough plays the character of Sherrie Christian, a small town girl from Oklahoma who took the bus to follow her dreams of becoming a singer in Los Angeles. She discovered that having a life in L.A was tough,so she became a waitress, a stripper, and ended up as a successful singer. Julianne Hough was in the movie ‘Burlesque’, where she played the role of Georgia, a burlesque dancer, alongside Christina Aguilera, who played the role of Ali, a small town girl from Iowa who took the bus to follow her dreams of becoming a singer in L.A. She found out that having a life in LA was tough, she became a waitress, a burlesque dancer, and ended up as a successful Burlesque dancer/singer. Sounds familiar? Here’s more;
Christina Aguilera shares the same birthday with Brad Pitt (December 18). Brad Pitt was in the movie “Interview With a Vampire” alongside Tom Cruise, who played the role of Lestat. The film’s sequel, “Queen of the Damned” no longer had Tom Cruise as Lestat. The role of Lestat was reprised by Stuart Townsend. In the story, Lestat became a worldwide rock-superstar, a rock god. Tom Cruise plays the role of Stacee Jaxx in “Rock of Ages”, a worldwide rock-superstar, a rock god. Did you see the connection?
Tom Cruise shared the big screen with Catherine Zeta-Jones in ‘Rock of Ages’. Catherine Zeta-Jones played the role of Elena Montero in the film, “The Mask of Zorro” with Antonio Banderas, as the titular character. Antonio Banderas was also in the film ‘Interview With the Vampire” as Armand. He was with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in the film.
So, going back to Catherine Zeta-Jones who played the sexy character of Elena in “The Mask of Zorro”, it’s very interesting to note that, back in 2003, Christina Aguilera made a skit in SNL entitled “Besos Y Lagrimas”, and her character’s name is Elena.
Christina Aguilera returned to SNL in 2007, as a musical guest. During that time, Alec Baldwin was the guest host. Alec Baldwin now plays the role of Dennis Dupree in “Rock of Ages”.
‘Rock of Ages’ also has Mary J.Blige as one of main cast in the film. Back in 2000, Christina Aguilera and Mary J.Blige were rumored to have a feud with each other. But in 2011, Christina Aguilera participated in the second annual Mary J Blige Honors Concert. Mary J. Blige plays the role of Justice Charrier, the owner of The Venus Club who befriends Sherrie. The name ‘Sherrie’ rhymes with the name ‘Cher’. Cher played the role of Tess in Burlesque, the owner of the Burlesque Lounge who befriends Ali, played by Christina Aguilera.
Hmmm. Am I crazy or what?
